Birdy - Daily Style

I have had an insanely busy day and I’m completely mental as well. I forgot my phone which I remember leaving in the pocket of my bathrobe for some strange reason. I also forgot to charge my camera which is why today’s photo is a little weird because Ted and I were racing to get the photo taken before it went flat. Oh and I had a haircut this morning that I nearly forgot about. Where is my brain? I’m just about to eat a banana because I haven’t stopped all day and then I’m having soy chai tea with Mr Smaggle before our Japanese lesson and then I’m going to make him cook me dinner while I watch Ghost Whisperer…

* Skirt from Chin Chin

* Singlet from Supre

* Lace high-necked top thrifted

* Lace wrap top thrifted

* Scarf from Sportsgirl

* Birdy headband Smaggle made. My birds finally arrived from America! I’ll share the birdy saga soon.

* Black flat ankle boots from Target

Early Style icons - Claudia Kishi from the Babysitters Club

Yes. I used to read Babysitters Club books. Actually I didn’t just read them I DEVOURED them and I had them all lined up on my shelf in numerical order with the mysteries and super specials on a shelf of their own. I’ve long since donated them all to charity and I am having serious regrets. Why? Because Claudia Kishi, the Vice-president of the Babysitters Club is one seriously stylish senorita. Except that she is clearly Japanese not Spanish. Man she is SO AWESOME! She’s a Japanese-American artist who adores junk food and Nancy Drew books. She is also a terrible speller. Anne M Martin is a genius for creating Claudia, the flawed but funky mis-fit of the Kishi family. Sometimes I would just read the whole series skipping the narrative and reading the parts about Claudia’s outfits. My most recent hobby has been barrelling my way through Salvos stores, shoving aside old ladies, to get my trashy children’s novel fix and I have to say I have found some of the best outfits that Claudia has to offer. I could always imagine her outfits perfectly in my head but because I’m rubbish at drawing I had never seen any of her outfits. The television show and movie Claudia outfits were pretty lame. I got the feeling that the costume designers hadn’t even read the books. Then I had a brainwave (a rare occurrence) and I thought ‘Why not use Polyvore?’. I nearly cried. Seeing her outfits come to life before my eyes has fed a very serious childhood addiction. For those Babysitters fans out there you’re about to get very excited…

The Mystery at Claudia’s House - Mystery #6

“I see my body as a blank canvas, and I can put anything I want onto that canvas, depending on my mood. Does that make any sense? I was thinking this over, and checking today’s outfit (lace leggings, purple tie-dyed T-shirt dress, and purple high-tops) in the mirror, when I was snapped back to reality by Charlotte who was tugging on my sleeve.”

I added some arm socks and fruit earrings. Although you’ll notice that the earrings are different to each other - that’s a HUGE Claudia trait. And sometimes she is so quirky she wears ONE EARRING! The mind boggles at the coolness that is Claudia.

Babysitters on Board! - Super Special #1

“Then the three of us got dressed quickly, but silently. Well, I got dressed quickly. This was because while I’d been lying in my bunk the night before I’d planned exactly what I was going to wear. I put on my new blue-and-white bikini and over that, a pink sundress with spaghetti straps at the shoulders and big blue buttons down the front. Then I accessorized. I tied a pink and blue scarf around my waist, knotting it in the middle, added my snake bracelet and feather earrings, wound my hair up on top of my head, and finally put on these white sandals with long laces that you crisscross up your legs and tie in a bow.”

I love the fact that every piece of the outfit is described from head to toe. And Claudia always matches everything and rarely dresses in more than two colours. I think she’s on to something there…

Kristy’s Big Day - Book #6

“Claudia Kishi, our vice president and a junk addict, was prowling around her room, trying to remember where she’d hidden a large bag of M&Ms. She was wearing one of her usual outrageous outfits: a black leotard and skintight red pants under a white shirt that was so big it looked like a lab coat. Claudia’s a wonderful artist and she had decorated the shirt herself, covering it with designs painted in acrylic. She had pinned her long, black hair back at the sides with red clips”

I had to give her a butterfly ring and some Balenciagas. I get that she is thirteen and that she can’t afford designer footwear on four dollars an hour. I’m also aware that technically these shoes didn’t exist when the book was written but don’t you think that Claudia’s favourite designer would be Balenciaga? With a little Westwood mixed in?

I spent countless days dragging a very patient Mr Smaggle through every secondhand bookstore along the east coast and forced him to make me cups of tea while I carefully re-read the chronicles of my childhood. I marked every outfit page with a Post-it and started the laborious task of typing them into my computer. I was around half way through this when the working part of my brain went ‘Hey! You know that internet thing that you use sometimes? Maybe there’s some kind of Claudia website?’. Insert politically incorrect phrase meaning ‘person of limited intelligence’ here. I found a website called What Claudia Wore and it is incredible. It’s written by an American gal called Kim who loves Claudia but seems to have serious issues with the rest of the babysitting bunch. Especially Dawn. Her writing is hilarious and in her more recent entries she adds her own commentaries to the text exerpts. It’s golden and every Babysitter fan should read it…

Yellow t-shirt - Daily Style

Ahhh! Busy day again. Browny is away for a week so I’m borrowing my friend Ted to be my photographer. Ain’t she sweet? We are both really sore though because we had the group fitness class from hell this morning. I imagine that neither of us will be very happy tomorrow. This afternoon I might bake something delicious and make crafty things…

* Skirt thrifted in Newtown

* T-shirt from Redbubble from the artist azzamckazza who is awesome. I like the way my skirt cuts off the image. The little robot looks like he is panicking because my belly button is eating his feet! Ha ha ha!

* Tan boots from Nine West

* Ribbon from Lincraft which I planned to do this to but never got around to it so it’s just pinned in place.

* Belt from BCBG

Oh this morning the cutest thing happened! This lady was walking towards me with the biggest smile on her face. Her smile was so contageous that I smiled back although I assumed she was smiling at someone behind me and I just got caught in the cross fire. She then stopped, grabbed my arm and said ‘What a beautiful outfit. You look gorgeous!’

How lovely is that? I was totally stoked and walked away feeling all warm and gushy.

Three ladies who have stealable style…

From Facehunter one always find inspiration… gimme, gimme, gimme…..

Excessive amounts of chain necklaces worn all at the same time. I’m cleaning out my jewellery box and making one of these ASAP.

The ability to mix red and green without looking like a Christmas elf. Usually the mixing of these colours irritates me more than Bindi Irwin but this girl looks… incredible. I’ll also take the flawless skin and perfectly toned arms thank you.

Green boots. They have been on my list forever but I have never actually seen them. These are perfect. And so is her haircut. And I suspect her dress is denim. Swoon.

Russh Magazine Under Fire!

Hmmm… My favourite magazine Russh is in a wee bit of trouble. Apparently they showed the breasts of an underage (sixteen year old) model in their latest issue. Right… so… what’s the problem here? If the model and parents agree on it who cares? The ridiculously talented editor of Russh, Natalie Shukur defends the shoot by saying that Russh readers ‘get it’ and also that the shoot tells a story and is not simply a meaningless nude shoot. I haven’t yet purchased my new Russh but I imagine I will love it and spend the next few days spouting about how bored people must be to complain about such stupid things. However I am completely biased because I’m all a glow with Russh love but I’m dying to know - what do my readers think? Is it inappropriate to show an under aged model’s breasts in a magazine shoot? What about catwalk work? Do the critics have a point or are they nasty people looking for a poor defenceless incredibly fabulous independent magazine to pick on?

P.S The model’s name is Zippora Seven. And she just posed topless at the age of 16 in an awesome magazine and caused a truck load of controversy. Could she get any cooler?

How to steal the look of Betsey Johnson Ready-to-Wear 2008

I do love a bit of Betsey. Her ready-to-wear Fall 2008 collection makes me love her even more. The look is slightly trashy and very vintage with unexpected lines and versatility through out the collection. I get so bored when designers pick a fabric and repeat the same dress 10 times with slightly different shapes. Yawn. Not the case with Ms Johnson. Each of her outfits has an individual personality, much like the characters out of Rent - waif like band groupies who do drugs and steal but you love them anyway because they are so fabulous and tortured. The kind of girl who carries a massive bag everywhere because she is homeless and all the clothes she wears are borrowed or stolen yet she still manages to look like she fell straight off the catwalk and into a bar. Her make up is flawless, her diet consists of champagne and cigarettes and she is stuck in an abusive relationship with a guy she is in love with. Oh and she has a hidden talent like singing or painting that she either lives to pursue or halucinates about while dying from an overdose. Her life is made all the more fascinating because the girl you love to hate is wearing red lipstick, a beret, platform shoes, blue nail polish and fishnet stockings…

Here are a few covetable items to assist you in the pursuit of the ‘Bad girl with a heart of gold’ look…

* Blue nail polish - It makes you look a little like a corpse but lets face it, it’s the kind of the look we are aiming for here.

* Fish net, polka dot or lace stockings. They give the appearance of nakedness and they never cease to make an outfit look naughty.

* Fringing. Perfect for swirling on the dance floor or strutting down the street in your platforms.

* Crimped hair. Am I the only person who still thinks this is cool? If I had straight hair I would do this every day.

* An unexpected accessory. A beret, a man’s watch, a scarf tied around your waist. You want to make it look like you just stole it from somebody else. You know because you’re just so crazy like that…

* Platform shoes. None of this stiletto crap. You need the extra stability for your slow motion running scene.

* A piece of sentimental jewellery like a locket or a ring that you wear all the time and you get misty eyed and elusive whenever someone asks you about it.

I’m breaking out the blue polish this week…

Clown - Daily Style

Yeah look… I don’t have much to say about today’s outfit except that it looked really good last night when I was throwing it in my gym bag. Mama Smaggle even liked it. I think we need to have a chat later. I look like Bozo’s phsyco girlfriend clown. Anyway this afternoon I’m off to an appointment at the gym then having drinks with my lovely friend before she goes to Texas to talk about very intelligent things. Then it’s dinner with the Mr and then I’m off to bed early because I have to work my little butt off tomorrow…

* Yellow opaques from Myer

* Black skirt from Valley Girl

* T-shirt from Itrip Iskip

* Black top from Cowboys and Angels

* Fabric bangle Smaggle made

* Yellow Bangle from Diva

* Boots from Nine West

Not a good day in the land of Smaggle Style…
