Fashion Rant Friday.

I wrote this the last time I wore my long green skirt. This skirt is what I call the ‘No Social Etiquette Skirt’. This means that when I wear this skirt people openly stare at me, talk about me as I walk by and give postive, negative and down right rude feedback on the skirt as well as other pieces I have worn in the past.

It’s an interesting thing when one works in an office building and dresses a little differently than the other employees. It’s also odd what sort of a reputation you make for yourself, sometimes an entirely incorrect one. For instance today I am wearing a really long green checked skirt with ruffles. It’s very Chloe Sevigny in Big Love, minus the braid. The comment I received from a lovely lady I work with was that she was delighted to see me out of mini skirts and ‘god knows what’ looking so elegant and ladylike. Excellent. Somehow by owning two skirts that end above my knees (by no means ‘mini’ in any way and exclusively worn with opaque tights) I have developed a reputation as the office whore. And just quietly the skirt I am wearing is not at all ladylike. It’s really strange and I look like I am going to country barn-yard dance but I love the damn thing so I am wearing it anyway. And while on the subject of the maxi-skirt I am sick every middle aged woman screaming ‘Oh my god! I had a dress JUST LIKE THAT in the 70’s’ in my face every time I wear something vintage. Yes of course you had one just like it in the 70’s and it was fabulous and now I am wearing it so please stop freaking out you stupid cow. It’s really not that interesting that I am wearing something similar to something you wore 30 years ago. I also drive a car and you did too so are you going to shit in your pants about that? On a more popular fashion note I saw a guy with killer side-burns wearing a leather jacket at ANU yesterday. He was so cool I wanted him to start clicking his fingers and singing shooda-bop-bop, shooda-bop-bop, shooda-bop-bop yeah! But alas there is a severe lack of American high school wheelie bleachers at ANU.

Kenneth Jay Lane, marry me.

kenneth-jay-lane-pic.jpg

I hate Amazon.com. It always makes me have no money. I was very angry this morning to discover that they have a bevy of amazingly niche fashion books including this one about Kenneth Jay Lane. Have I mentioned Kenneth before? He is my imaginary boyfriend. I first disvored him when I was reading a book years ago and saw all these animal print enamel bangles and chunky coral earrings. Ever since that moment every time I open a Vogue magazine and my breath gets knocked out of me by a gorgeous mammoth cocktail ring or a sharks tooth necklace you can almost garantee my lover was the god of creation. Unfortunately my budget forbids me from purchasing his wares on a regular basis however I did promise myself that if I went to the gym every day for a month I could splurge on the double headed tiger bangle that Diana Vreeland wore. That was 5 months ago. I still don’t have it. But look at the pretty necklace on the cover of this book! Doesn’t it make you want to cry?

Frilly Bum

ahill1.jpgbustle.jpg

I will admit freely that I have enjoyed a monogamous and lengthy relationship with Alannah Hill’s designs over the past few years. Although I have grown up and my tastes have changed I still love to check out her stores and collections. From the Australian Vogue site I was enthralled to find that Ms Hill is bringing back the bustle! I know you gals with a lot of junk in your trunk are screaming that a bustle would add unessessary to volume to an area that is fighting a losing battle as it is but this little number is quite flat and if you get a bustle that tapers in a little it will half the width of your bum. I promise. And for my fellow flat arsed ladies well, we can wear puffier ones to add a little hamburger to that shake. Also check out Style Bytes (who is the prettiest girl in the world - you need to scroll down to find the article) who makes her own bustles and shows the different ways you can wear it. Also who can forget that weird but wonderful chicken’s bum thing that Carrie Bradshaw wore with a pink denim skirt on Sex in the City? If you still aren’t convinced think about this - how many girls do you see wearing bustles? None. What a fabulous incentive.

Voodoo Moss…

kate-moss-voodoo.jpgkate-moss-voodoo2.jpg

I found these photos today on uN NOUvEAU iDEAL - (This guy is fabulous! Read his site his story is amazing.)

These photos are for W magazine and I love seeing Kate Moss looking like this. My hair is cut really similar to this at the moment and I am having  to stop myself from dyeing my hair platinum blonde, shaving my eyebrows and starving myself while wearing enough bangles to stock Diva. Actually I was already tempted to shave my eyebrows after seeing La Vie En Rose - damn these influential images seducing me to kill my own face! I am completely addicted to these theatrical looks at the moment. I was observing the other day that most girls around town make some sort of an effort with their clothing. It’s pretty easy to look somewhat trendy these days so it’s becoming harder to stand out in the crowd in terms of your clothing. I love seeing girls making an effort with their make up and  hair and I’m not talking about mascara and a brush people! I’m talking bright red lips in the middle of the day and massive teased hair  with ribbons and clips and dramatic eye make up and false eyelashes. I saw the  most beautifully groomed girl the other day with a perfect 1950s dress and heels and her hair all in pin-curls. She also had a massive sailor tattoo with roses and hearts right across her chest… how splendid.

Secret Wedding Business…

bracelet-wedding.jpgfeather-hair-piece.jpg

Shhh! I’ve been asked to be a stylist  at a wedding for a very dear friend of mine who I’ve been mates with for years. She is having an engagement party soon but it’s really a secret wedding and I am the stylist! But seeing as no one knows about my site yet (and won’t until after the wedding) I though I would put a sneak peak of the accessories that I made. I made a hair piece from a snowy white feather pad and chunks of material I cut from when the dress got hemmed- And I will swear on my Chanel 2.55 (that I don’t yet own) that I thought of this BEFORE the Erin Featherstone collection in 2007! The bride will vouch for this once the wedding is over. Also a three strand glass pearl bracelet with matching little earrings. Seriously this girl looks so gorgeous in her dress it’s almost a shame to accessorise it… but I did anyway. Will post pics of the final look once the big day has come and the proverbial cat is out of the bag. Oh if you want to get your own feather pads go to http://stores.ebay.com/ART-CREATIONS-by-SHIR-LEE she is a little stingy with the postage ($8 to post FEATHERS? I believe paper weighs more and costs less) but true to form her feathers are beautiful and reasonably priced. My advice is to stock up and make the postage worth your while!

Hair Jewels

hair-jewel-pic-2.jpghair-jewel-photo.jpg

I saw a girl  in a shop the other day wearing tracksuit pants and hair jewels. It was an odd ensemble but her hair looked amazing. It was a blessing in disguise that she had not attempted to style her hair in any way because she had haphazardly shoved these hair clips all over her head which resulted in a fabulous Amy Winehouse kind of birds nest creation. I couldn’t resist trying it out myself and promptly purchased three of the same jewelled hair band from Equip with the intention of wearing them at the same time. The over all effect wasn’t brilliant because my hair is thick and dark and it’s hard to get any hair clips to stand out but here is the general effect. They also gave me a headache after a while. These also look the best when I have my head down or if you are looking at them from a great height which is difficult because there aren’t too many people around that are taller than me.
